Daniel's Bistro is an award-winning contemporary bistro-restaurant serving a variety of fine French cuisine in a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Terrace seating is also provided in the summer months.
It was our first visit to Daniels and as we had travelled to Edinburgh for the theatre (West Side Story - great show!) thought a pre theatre stop might be worth a try. Glad to say that the previous critiques were spot on. Lovely welcome, fine house wines - each of us trying the white and red. Very prompt service of nice fresh crispy bread and tastey butter. Daniels fish soup was deliciously flavoured with a little crab swimming around at the bottom of a very hot bowl. Just the way it should be served. The garlic sauce and cheese were a fantastic addition for the croutons. Just could have eaten a mountain of that. Wonderful. The other half's pate got the thumbs up too. Perfect starters. French sausages may well have been from the Paris market - what a fantastic dsh served with great nash and a sauce to die for. Even more of that gorgrous bread soaked up the left over sauce. I was now feeling full and baking hot. The complementary jug of iced water washed it all down a very satisfied throat. The other half cold not finish her beef bourguignon so I had to polish that off with just a little more bread. What a wonderful dish although the potatoes were a lttle unusual tasting. Not sure why but did not detract from the dish too much.I sampled the coffee and the other one had a floating island (cannot resist the vanilla custard choices!) Very pleasant dessert too. Had to sample her custard too. Excellent although like a little more vanilla myself. Wonderful shortie with the coffee and just the right amount of chocolates too. All that for less than £30. We shall return later in the summer I hope. The location must be a treat for those with expense accounts at the Scottish Government. Lucky them.
Daniel's is a lovely place located to the eastern side of Edinburgh (not far from Ocean Terminal).I was last there at Christmas time when I thoroughly enjoyed the delights of their Christmas menu. The atmosphere is airy without feeling cold – in fact far from it the place was buzzing! The food obviously takes on a Scottish twist but the menu is varied to ensure all tastes are catered for. The staff were pleasant and happy to provide advice. Portions were of a average to large size so best to prepare yourself in advance to ensure you have room for the delicious puddings on offer.
