  • 5 Lovely

This is one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh. As a vegetarian it can be a bit tricky finding a place that serves new and exciting cuisine but David Bann’s is always top notch. My favourites are the smoked tofu and the dosa. I have always found the staff really friendly and happy to recommend any new dishes on offer. The atmosphere is always great, very cosy and intimate.I would also recommend their amazing veggie brunches, they are always really hearty and totally tasty.Overall I think everyone should visit the restaurant. It offers great cuisine at an affordable price.GO THERE!

  • 5 delicious

I had an amazing meal at David Bann during the Edinburgh festival. I went with a group of 8 and they were very friendly and accommodating. It was one of those very long leisurely dinner with lots of great food an wine and it was lovely!I thought the food was delicious-- I had pumpkin ravioli and chili with chocolate coriander sauce. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water! Everyone with me absolutely loved their meal. The atmosphere is very clean and nice-- a bit upscale. The prices are a little expensive, but you get what you pay for-- it was well worth it.

  • 1 David Bann should be banned!

I am so so so very sorry to everyone who visited this restaurant based on my review from 2006. Not visited this restaurant for at least a year and a half and was very excited to be going tonight ... oh dear.Lets run through the experience for you.Arrival ... not friendly "NAME!"Drinks ... warm white wine and probably the worst Mojito this side of Hadrian's Wall.Follow-up Drinks ... no idea as no-one asked if we wanted any more and we never saw our waitress again.Bread ... stale (its only Friday surely you can get fresh bread)Starters ...1. Thai fritters (tasteless minced tofu, soggy) 2. Humous & bread (bread stale again but the humous was fine)Mains ...1. Tasted like Old E'Paso mix stuffed in a red pepper served with soggy chips) 2. A bad Indian curry in a soggy pancake with a warm cabbage leaf on the side filled with "something" - just like Granny used to make!)Dessert ... didn't want to risk itService ... very bad (except for the waiting assistant who seemed to be the only person working)I am giving this restaurant 1 star because it does not let me give it zero and that is being generous. It was so bad that seriously nothing could tempt me to eat there again.

  • 2 Sadly disappointed

I used to rave about this place to friends and family - always enjoyed the food and the service was always impecable. But I went for a meal there in June for my 30th birthday and we were kept waiting at our table for over 40 minutes before any orders were taken - no mention of us even getting a drink order in. The staff were not busy, and looking around other customers were noticeably annoyed by the lack of service. The menu on this occassion disappointed me also, I did feel rather let down and wished I had chosen somewhere else for my birthday meal. Hopefully the waiting staff have gotten themself up to scratch since then.

  • 4 Great for non-veggies!

Oozing with Scandinavian chic, this veggie hotspot is not your average hippie/communist tofu joint. The dishes are excitingly complex and the bold flavours and hearty portions will pleasantly surprise even the most robust Angus-fed Highlanders. The rich but not too filling hummus is a great starter, and should leave you room for the creamy risotto or a stuffed Portobello mushroom. Mains tend to be a tad pricey considering the lack of meat, but what did you expect from a bunch of vegetarian entrepreneurs. I prefer meat but I was quite surprised by the originalities of the dishes and the taste of cooked up vegetable ones. Although you notice people are veggie and the conversation of some of them do rather get irritating they are so bleeming opinionated!

  • 4 Another Satisfied Veggie..................

Now let's be clear, Bann's should not be judged on the basis that it is a vegetarian restaurant, but it is, in fact, a great restaurant to the extent that it is regularly chosen as the place we have our staff nights out even though I am the only veggie in the team.I would heartily recommend David Banns whether even if a meat-eater as there is enough of a selection on the menu that you will find something you will naturally chose. A particular favourite of mine is a weekend brunch over the weekend papers. Great value for a fantastic selection of food served in a well appointed venue. 4/5 for me!

  • 1 Best Vegetarian in Edinburgh

David Bann is a great restaurant for veggies and non-veggies alike. Located in a side street between the Royal Mile and Cowgate it is hidden enough to miss out on the thronging masses of tourists who wander the Royal Mile yet in a great location to visit the local bars and clubs after your meal. The menu is total vegetarian and it is vegetarian heaven. But even if you are not a vegetarian you will love this food, we have taken many non-veg people to this restaurant and they are all very impressed.Food is fresh, original and very very tasty with a good selection of wines and cocktails. I like the feel of the restaurant with its subdued lighting and funky upmarket vibe. The atmosphere is relaxed, service is efficient and friendly and David Bann is often sauntering about in his whites chatting with tables.I really like this restaurant and I think it is something special. If you are a vegetarian you simply MUST try this restaurant (leaves The Gate for dust) and if you are not a vegetarian you might be converted after eating here.
