Beanscene is a cafe bar with live music (on Tuesdays) that serves an assortment of Mediterranean dishes as well as cakes, pies and pastries to eat in or take away.
Nice for a chat with friends at lunch time :] RE review down there, this beanscene is still open :] x
Although I'm a teatotaller, I do need a caffeine injection each day and visit most of the coffee shops of Edinburgh from time to time. Of all that I have visited, this is one of those which I am least likely to return to. I know it's very popular, but for me, the 'mix' just wasn't right. I love a Sunday afternoon spending a morning reading the papers with a warm latte in hand and, as a result of traffice restrictions one day, decided to try this as opposed to my regular haunt. Although the coffee was good, I found the music far too loud to be comfortable to the extent that I put my own headphones in (they're noise cancelling ones!) just to be able to sit and read the papers comfortably. The noise was probably the biggest off-putting factor, although the day I visited, there was a large number of families in which wasn't really conducive to a relaxing Sunday morning read of the papers. If kids and loud music are your 'thing', however, I suspect you will love this Beanscene.

I came across this Beanscene about 6 years ago while out walking with my first grandchild in her pram. Unsure of the welcome I'd receive with all my baggage I hovered at the door until the smell of really good coffee forced me to enquire. A few seconds later a smiling young woman invited me in (with pram and baby). She couldn't have done more - carefully choosing a safe corner for baby, away from hot coffee,in such a relaxed but efficient manner that I felt compelled to enjoy a delicious meal. I fed the baby there too. Nothing was too much trouble. Beanscene remains my favourite relaxing place in town to this day.
UPDATE: THIS BEANSCENE NEAR THE PARLIAMENT IS NOW CLOSED, but the one on the bridges is still open I think.Great place for coffee and to read the paper at leisure. Been here a couple of times and it is very laid back. Not sure what it like during the day since it is just up the road from Parliament but at night I can recommend it.
